Trying Retin A Liquid on my Scalp

So I really tried the viniger, the rosemary rinse, the sulphur shampoo and still nothing worked. I was in full, smelly, pustule breakout. The dermatologist took a culture and no yeast or bacteria grew -- now how could that be with the smell and "pimples".

She said it was follicular occulusion -- I guess that means blocked hair follicles. The oil must ferment or something to cause the smell... and thankfully she got a whiff last visit. She said other than accutane (which she doesn't want me to be on long-term because it is suck a strong drug with unknown side effects for long-term use), which I tried and worked for a year, there was nothing she knew of to do.

So I asked what she would do it this was on my face, she said retin A. So I said lets try it in a form that will spread on the scalp. I put the liquid (which the pharmacy had to special order since it is rarely requested) in an "old fashioned" (not a pump type) nose spray bottle with the hose pulled out so it would just barely drip out the small hole. I run it across my scalp at night and get pretty good coverage without rubbing it around and drying out my dyed hair (it is alcohol based).

So it seems to have worked! The breakout stopped and things have settled. Most importantly, the smell is gone! Now we all know that this could have been a coincidence, so I will withhold judgement and report back the next breakout, if there is one. For now, I will apply Retin A every night until this is totally gone ( a few bumps oersist) and then only when I think my scalp is getting a little smelly, or bumpy like it is brewing to breakout.

Maybe this is the answer. I am so lucky to finally have a dermatologist who will work with me as we experiment with cures. I guess this is one of those problems that is infrequent enough that no MD has taken it on as a medical study -- like who would want to specialize in smelly scalp. Not much to brag about at cocktail parties.

IF anybody else tries this let me know. I do check in about once a month.

Re: A call to civility? Formerstinkhead is the one who doesn't handle herself properly. She seems to attack anyone who says Jason did not work for them.
