I have been experiencing some thinning for almost 2 years now. 6 months after I first noticed this, I had an appointment with the gynocologist who did a full thyroid panel. Although the T4 and TSH was fine, I did have over 2000 antibodies as well as an enlarged thyroid reading on the ultrasound. My first endocrinologist did nothing but run bloodwork and tell me that technically my hormone levels were normal so there was nothing he would do for me, although I kept persuing the issue with him. Finally, after 3 visits, he asked for a referral hoping I wouldn't get one, I'm sure. Well, I changed my primary care doctor who recommended me to an endocrinologist who I have heard wonderful things about. She put me on 5 MCs of Cytomel which is T3 and T4. It has only been 1 week and it is a low dose, so it is too soon to tell if it has helped yet. My hair has never fallen out by the handfuls as some women here are experiencing. It has been a gradual thinning, but I am only 25 (just turned 23 when this started) so my dermatologist was inclined to believe it was not AGA. I do have other symptoms such as a lump in my throat when I swallow, some depression (which could be from my obsession over my once extremely thick hair), slightly less energy, and lack of interest and enthusiam in activities. My husband also tells me I swallow very loudly when I drink which I attribute to the enlarged thyroid. Well that's it in a nutshell, and believe me, that is the short version, because after 2 years of this, there is quite a bit more I have left unsaid. I have been reading posts on and off during this whole time and for the first time I have hope and feel that I may have something to contribute so I decided to share this. The one good thing that has come of all of this is that I have learned about all different types of hairloss along my quest to help myself and have become pretty knowledgeable about the tyroid.
