Hi Michelle! I was doing some more thinkning on this Aldactone and thyroid issue. Aldactone is an anit-androgen...it primarily blocks aldosterone, the hormone responsible for sodium/water balance in the body. It also blocks other androgens simultaneously, which is why we use it for testosterone. Here's my theory: If Aldactone blocks aldosterone (water retention was my first symptom to go away after starting Aldactone) then it deters the absorption of salt, with contains iodine. If someone has repeated iodine deficiency/low salt intake, then their thyroid is not being supplied with this crucial element and thus will eventaully mimick hypothyroidism. I have looked up hypothyroidism and articles which mention iodine deficiency causes hypothyroidism. I know it's complex and maybe a crazy theory but what do think?
Today was my last day of the thyroid scan and uptake. Thrity minutes into taking the iodine pill, the left side of my throid become warm and tender, it felt larger'uncomfortable. Did this happen to you? I asked the tech about it and she said that I wasn't suppose to feel anything weird or uncomfortable, yet I did.
I get my results next Wednesday along with latest ferritn levels. Thanks for all your advice and love, Sidney
