Anne, hi.
First let me say that everyone's response/reaction/effectiveness is not the same with spironolatone. It varies per individual.
Some women have posted on these forums that they have been using it for years and years and that it really has helped them with their hair loss issues. Unfortunately, they don't stick around to share their experience with others.
Those of us who do will have varying opinions about it. That said, let me tell you mine.
Spironolactone slowed my shedding from 400+ a day to about 20-30 within a month's time (this is really quick and I cannot tell you why, but that is what happened in my case). By month three it was about 10 hairs lost. My shedding stayed within reason for the following eight months. At the eight-month mark my shedding picked up again and gradually increased to 400+ a day again.
I still felt that the spironolactone was/is doing something, but is not strong enough for my situation. I recently saw a tricologist that said I am getting regrowth from 13-14 months ago, so it's either that and/or the Rogaine.
I started Proscar (a DHT inhibitor) in October and three months later, that is now, the shedding is down to 10-20 hairs.
So, I think for me the combo treatment is helping. I hope it lasts this time.
That's my experience. Hopefully the others on here will tell you theirs.
Remember there are some people who take this medication for years and swear by it. Every person's hormonal makeup is unique.
