Hi Cate.

First let me say you can get Florisine from Westons Internet:

Cate, I am so sorry to hear that you are having the break-through bleeding again. You know, it could be the spiro. How many months have you been on it? I was thinking this morning. Dr. Redmond answers questions on the Bald Truth website. It may take a while for him to answer your question, but it wouldn't hurt in telling him you situation and see what his response is just for----well, you know. He also is a guest doctor on hairsite and I will link you to both links. Some people are probably going to write negative posts about that doctor once I post this, but at least you could "hear" what he writes back. It might help you in some way. I do know it takes time for him to answer at times. Just a thought. Here are the links: http://hairlosscommunity.infopop.net/3/OpenTopic?a=cfrm&s=264293696&f=838296557 (I think you have to register here, but I think he replys faster)

As to the woman on the estrogen solution, I just know some women were using topical estrogen, like Megan. I forgot the other woman's name. There have been posts from time to time about it. Check the two previous aldactone forums and I am sure you will run across the thread. Hey, I will just post an article asking "all those who use estrogen solution, please come forward and answer Cate's question." ;-)

I take my Aldactone/spiro four separate times a day. That is sometimes inconvient for some, that is why some doctors say take it all at one time or twice a day. When I asked my doctor about it what I got was if I was able to space it out that it was good and to do that.

I don't know how you are affected by going to the bathroom. I take my last dose by 5:00 p.m. so that I am not bothered through the night. But as long as you are taking it in a schedule that suits your needs whenever you take it is good.

As to fatty food and the absorption issue with the pill. I don't know. I mean it was never mentioned to me that I should take it with anything. I was successful on it for eight months with just taking 150 mgs and taking it normally. It does say take with food as not to bother your stomach. I've taken it on an empty stomach with no problems, but everyone is different.

I will say that now I have added L-lysine to my diet three times a day to "hopefully" help with the absorption of the minox/Proscar, but who is to say that it really helps or not. I am only going by what I read. It is supposed to help with iron absorption too, so why not spironolactone? What do you think?

As with all medications, you should raise your concerns with your doctor and discuss the possible side-effects/benefits/risks/ect.

In my spironolactone insert it reads: "Adverse Reastions: The following adverse reactions have been reported and, within each category (body system), are listed in order of decreasing severity. (Note: Liver is at the end.)

Digestive: gastric bleeding, ulceration, gastritis, diarrhea and cramping, nausea vomiting.

Endocrine: Gynecomastia (see PRECAUTIONS), Inability to achieve or maintain erection, irregular menses or amenorrhea, post-menopausal bleeding. Carcinoma of the breast has been reported in patiens taking spironolactone but a cause and effect relationship has not been established.

Hematolgic: Agranuloytosis. Hypersensitvity: Fever, urticaria, maculopapular or erythematous cutaneous eruptions, anaphylactic reactions, vasculitis.

Nervious system/psychiatric: Mental confusion, ataxia, headache, drowsiness, lethargy.

Liver/biliary: a very few cases of mixed cholestatic/hepatocellular toxicity, with one reported fatality, have been reported with spironolactone administration.

Renal: renal dysfunction (including renal failure."

Cate, have your ever read the inserts to any medication? There are often long lists of adverse reactions to any drug and they can sound very scary. A lot of medications talk about liver toxity. Spironolactone has been prescribed for many years.

The best thing is to ask a medical professional what he/she thinks the risks are.

Hope this helps some. Thanks for the well-wishes too. I am still doing well in the shedding department.

My best to you too, Michelle D.
