Hi, Ann.
I thought you meant AGA, but didn't want to assume. Let me first mention that scalp biopsies are really not a conclusive why of telling whether someone has AGA or TE. There are too many variables involved and not all laboratories are skilled enough in getting accurate results. Many women on this site can attest to that one.
So, I wouldn't go totally by your biopsy.
I have to say that your ferritin levels look low, but I don't know the difference between ug/l measurements and ng/ml measurements. According to a researcher/doctor that wrote the link I have attached below, DH Rushton, he says that the ferritin levels should be above 70 ng/ml. But you did say your ferritin dropped, so that may be part of your problem. Check out this link: http://www.keratin.com/ao/ao013ref003.shtml
You say that your hormone levels are indicative of perimenopause. Does that mean that your estrogen is dropping, your testosterone levels are rising? Curious, because the increased testosterone levels, if this is the case, and the decreasing levels of estrogen may be contributing factors to your hair loss. Are you still menstruating regularly?
Hair loss on other parts of the body can be related to Alopecia totalis/thyroid conditions and I am sure a number of other things, but I have to say that my body hair seems to have decreased and in the beginning of my hair loss I swore (and can still remember) that all my body hair was gone except my eyebrows, underarms and pubic area (nice thing to say).
I have to add too, Ann, my eyelashes have been a problem even before this hair loss started and I think it is related to two things, Rosacea and hormones. I am waiting to see if they fill in with my medication. Strange thing, my eyebrows are starting to fill in. I really think it's the hormonal connection. My mom lost most of her eyebrows right after she turned 40.
I am the same as you in the department of getting regrowth and then having it fall out.
Anne, perhaps your hair loss is partly due to hormones. If you test normal you may just have a sensitivity to the testosterone production in your scalp (my case).
I guess your choice would be to wait it out and see if this TE/CTE will figure itself out in time, since you definitely have had triggers for it and try to get your ferritin levels back up or try the hormonal approach with an anti-androgen therapy and/or BCP/HRT.
I cannot say whether I think someone has AGA. I wish I could. You have a lot of factors here, ie, operation/antiviral medication, which can induce TE/CTE, low iron (I think if I interpreted what you said right) and now perimenopause.
You have to weigh the pros and the cons and decide with your doctor what is best for you. You know the road I took. For me "so far" it's working.
Let me know what you think. Good luck, Michelle D.
