NO you do not add to dirty glue, it's useless and only ends up pushing that dirty glue more into the lace. Unless you have the gun, it's a bitch to get out.
The layer approach is used by some for a more secure, longer duration. Basically you apply a layer of glue, blow it dry with a hair dryer(it will get real tacky to touch), apply another coat.. blow dry again, etc.
Most people use no more than 3 coats. What it does is create more of a foundation for the lace to hold on to. The lace can also end up getting dirtier because of it.
A good example would be to think of a very thin wet sponge and rest your finger on it, basically the bottom of your finger would be the only thing touching that sponge. Now if you use a sponge 3 times that size and rest your finger on it, you will notice more of the sponge raching the sides of that finger as well(instead of just the bottom).
Richard does not recommend the 3 layer approach.
