Bryan Shelton recently posted the following statement on alt.baldspot.

"Sawaya found that there is an "intense upregulation" of androgen receptors in response to the use of finasteride. It's almost certainly the same with any other 5a-R inhibitor or antiandrogen."

This statement leads me to several questions.

Where is the androgen receptor in relation to the hair cells in the scalp?

Is there more than 1 per hair follicle?

If DHT is completely blocked or near completely, perhaps with Dutasteride does androgen receptor upregulation matter? Perhaps for other androgens?

Is this a potential mechanism for the reason that propecia does not work for some people. It has been postulated often that it was due to less DHT inhibition in those individuals or these individuals had more type I 5AR than type II 5AR. Is another possible explanation that their bodies more intensely upregulate the number of androgen recpetors?

Why does the body upregulate androgen receptors. Its response to do so seems to indicate that it needs a certain amount of DHT or other androgens. DHT is always treated as the evil chemical agent here but why would the body appear to seek it by upregulating androgen receptors?

It would seem that androgren receptor upregulation would be a net negative for us in the war againsts hairloss. It seems that even if I use propecia I need to use green tea extract an androgen receptor downregulation or spiro as an androgen receptor blocker.

Someone make sense of this for me. Bryan Shelton you are the likely candidate. :-) Thanks
