Your situation reminds me of when my high forehead, receded temples situation suddenly turned into serious recession and thinning. Your doing the right thing though, being on Propecia and Minoxidil. The "50 year" comment doesn't mean jack, really. Trying to make hairloss predictions are tough because if you guess wrong it's usually too late to do anything about it, so preventative maintenance is the key which your doing.
Shedding is *most likely* a combination of factors, but overall a good sign. Humans shed most around November from what I have read in several places, and Minoxidil particularly caused me to shed, although I don't recall Propecia doing that but many people claim it does. You almost certainly will have some response to the medicine, but it will take oh about six months on average to really start to see a difference, though the more hair you have to start the better your results typically are.
What your biggest frustration is going to be with the medicines is two-fold; first, everyone gets slightly different results, so it's hard to ever be sure what to expect with them going in. Second, Propecia (finasteride) usually gives declining results over time, at least that is the experience of a number of people on it a while and in Merck's five-year study, like me (four years in March). Minoxidil I am not too sure about, someone else could answer the question of long term use. However, that being said, I was not using the two together as you are. The effect of both together outweighs the effect of either alone, though the jury is out on how much of a synergistic effect there really is, or are the effects merely additive. On the five year Propecia study, look around on this board, there are plenty of links to the study, I suggest you read it now to have some idea what to expect.
A couple of other thoughts:
- peruse the HM forum if you don't already. It's *possible* we may have a real effective medical treatment in a few years, numerous researchers are working on a tissue engineering technique
- if cost is an issue, and you don't mind the hassle, consider getting Proscar (finasteride) which is the original market name for Propecia. Substantially cheaper, you just have to cut your own pills.
- There is an alternative to Rogaine, called Loniten. It is an oral form, but there are significant side effects in some people. However, it is more effective than Rogaine could ever hope to be in most people. Use this with extreme caution, but be aware it's out there. Don't expect your Derm to give you a prescription either.
- the libido drop is normal for many men using Propecia, and in most folks goes away after a few months. Limited erectile dysfunction and watery semen, "blue balls" and so forth are also associated. Gynocomastia is possible, but I don't know but a couple people this ever happened to.
- Look into using Nizoral or Neutrogena T-Gel, both show some evidence of aiding thinning hair.
- there is a plethora of supplements with evidence they might help bolster your hair, namely Biotin, L-lysine, Zinc+B6, Saw Pawmetto, etc.
Hope this helps, and good luck.
