Billy,
The basic side effects are loss of libido, erectile dysfunction, lower ejaculate volume, and gynecomastia. I am not sure that I believe these are long term complications in the sense that these complications will not disappear once you get off the drug. Even the cases of finasteride induced gynecomastia seem transitory. Fortunately for the side effects issue, finasteride has a short half life in the body, 6-8 hours.
Taking propecia every other day will reduce the total amount of DHT inhibition, good for side effects avoidance, bad for the scalp. There are some people who are taking 5 mg of finasteride a day with no side effects and there are others who develop side effects taking 1 mg propecia per day. It varys with the individual. I would consider taking 1 mg propecia daily for 30 days and see if you have side effects. If you do, then consider dropping to 1 tablet every other day or a half a tablet every day. If you still get side effects from 1/2 tablet, then it probably is not the drug for you.
I doubt there will be any negative effect from stopping its use as far as a massive shed. If it makes you feel better and you decide to get off of it, there is no reason that you can not taper off.
I've advised you the best that I can and thats all this forum is (I'm not a doctor). The bottom line is that people are different and not everyone reacts to these medications exactly the same way. Propecia (finasteride) has worked well for some people and not for others. In the end you will have to try it yourself to see if it is going to work for you.
There are some people who believe that Arimidex can help avoid the side effects of taking excess finasteride and would rather use it to block the excess estrogen than reduce the finasteride usage. This produces the ideal combination (at least in theory), i.e. low DHT and low estrogren. I would be careful with arimidex though, it is a very powerful drug. It is also very expensive.
Hope that was helpful to you.
