Aloe fractions have shown hair growing effects in mice.Aloe stimulates fibroblast cell division which in proven to be hindered in invitro studies of balding fibroblasts.Dermal papilla are specialized fibroblasts,BTW.Other drugs which stimulate fibroblast cell division are: 1)antiandrogens 2)cimetidine(not as an antiandrogen) 3)minoxidil 4)insulin or insulinomimetics 5)mono-oligo-saccharides(glucose,fructose,galactose,lactose,ribose,mannan, beta,glucans)(check out sugar with wound healing on pubmed)
NOTE: skin peeling agents are also good at stimulating fibroblasts.Two things in mpb you want to stimulate:fibroblasts & keratinocytes. Keratinocytes may act as "feeders" for fibroblasts by secretion of paracrine factors. Fibroblast stimulation activates the dermal sheath cells surrounding upper follicular epidermis,so that new hair matrix and pappilla can regenerate from the rest of the follicle,and eventually a new hair shaft grows again.Dermal papilla and probably dermal sheath cells have the ability to induce new hair matrices and to form hair bulbs under preferred conditions(drugs which cause fibroblast mitosis).Plus fibroblasts secrete KGF a peptide with hair regulation effects of its own.
Look what happens in this study when dermal papilla are cocultured with keratinocytes.Btw,androgens effect keratinocytes also.

In the present study, the effects of aloenin on sebaceous gland size, hair growth and damaged skin were investigated. Aloenin significantly promoted hair growth in depilated mice, but did not affect sebaceous gland function in the hamster ear. Aloenin also had recuperative effects on tape-stripped human skin as determined from parameters such as the shape factor of corneocytes, thick abrasion, nuclear ghosts and cellular arrangement of corneocytes. Since aloenin is effective in healing damaged skin, it may be useful for the treatment of dermatological conditions in the future.
Plus aloe is loaded with 6 sodases and a catalase to boot.
