To not start one's program with systemic inhibition (prior to local) is a waste of time. Proctor has been around for a long time, how come there are no studies, or convincing before and afters? Why don't I know a single physician who recommends Proctor's concoctions? Most of his stuff has been around for years in an oral form as well--why doesn't he recommend that patients go for better results by combining the oral with his topical?
Even under the best of circumstances, ie, real suppression with Dut in conjuntion with a strong topical like cyoctol or RU58841, the topical must be formulated to get to the deepest roots, remain active at the root level for 24 hours/day, be applied to all areas of the scalp with the potential for follicle miniturization, and most importantly, be powerful enough to produce terminal hairs one can see from across the room (sorry, Proctor's stuff doesn't come close). Minoxadil mixed with Retin A solution might be worth a try, but ONLY after DHT suppression with finasteride (switched to Dut when available).
I just hate to see guys waste $ on the use of topicals that time has proven not to work by themselves (we'd all know about if they did). I also am concerned about certain posters here try to scare you away from systemic DHT inhibitors that have been proven to be very safe in the vast, vast majority of patients (if decreased ejaculatory volume causes you more stress than hairloss, by all means don't take finasteride--but don't then resort to wasting your money on topicals and fool yourself about the poor results).
I'm not saying that finasteride gives great results in most men, but I feel that Dut will probably give more impressive results, and those here trying to scare you from systemics may cause you to not try the most logical treatment for hairloss that has ever existed!
By the way, T3 (thyroid) is a hormone that has been around for many many decades. Many patients take too much of it because it gives them desired energy, and many other patients have thyroid glands that make too much thyroid hormone. My point--if thyroid grew hair, it would have been noticed long ago in individuals with too much systemic thyroid. Applying it topically is a waste. Let someone else but you try it first.
